Michigan CPL renewals are submitted through the Michigan State Police online renewal system. Our training walks you through it step by step — including how to retrieve your renewal PIN if you never received one.
The State’s online system asks for a PIN on its very first screen, along with your CPL number and driver’s license. Without it you cannot renew online.
Where the PIN comes from: your county clerk mails it to you in your renewal notice, usually three to six months before your CPL expires. It is not something we issue, and it is not printed on your license.
If you never received it, or you have lost the notice: contact your county clerk’s office and ask them to reissue your renewal PIN. They are the office that mails the notice, so they are the ones who can give you the PIN — it is not something the Michigan State Police or we can issue for you.
If you still cannot get a PIN, you are not stuck. The State accepts a paper renewal application instead — mail it with payment to the MSP CPL Unit, P.O. Box 30634, Lansing, MI 48909, or take it in person to your county clerk’s office.

Either way, you may apply up to six months before your CPL expires and up to one year after — so an expired license can still be renewed. The State’s renewal fee is $115, paid to them, not to us.
No. Michigan does not require CPL holders to take a formal renewal class, purchase an online course, or receive a new training certificate in order to renew their license.

Michigan CPL Training Academy offers optional renewal training for CPL holders who would like guidance completing their required review, learning about changes to Michigan firearm laws, refreshing important safety information, and completing their required range practice.
Our online renewal package includes instructional videos along with additional reading materials designed to help students complete the required three hours of review. We also offer range training for those who would like professional assistance completing their one hour of firing-range time.
Our classes, videos, and range sessions are not required by the State of Michigan. They are optional resources for CPL holders who want structured training and greater confidence that they understand the current laws and renewal requirements.
Each applicant remains responsible for completing the required review and range time and for truthfully signing the certification on their renewal application.
The 3 hours means time spent reviewing the training material, not just watching videos. The videos and the Michigan CPL Legal Reference Guide (included) together make up your 3 hours.
Yes. In-person students get a Renewal Certificate at the end of class, plus a copy by email. Online students press “I’ve finished the course — send my certificate” on their course page, and it’s emailed to them and stays downloadable there.
No. The State’s renewal site may offer an upload, but it’s optional. You can upload your Renewal Certificate or skip that step.
Your choice: on your own at a range, at our in-person renewal class, or with the private shooting lesson in our $54.99 package, which counts as your hour.
90 days from purchase. In your last 2 weeks, your course page will ask if you need more time. Tick “Yes” and you’ll get 30 more days right away. It’s a one-time extension, so plan to finish within it. If your access has already ended, call us at 313-473-0002.

Your current CPL and a photo ID. Arrive by 10:30 AM, or come at 9:00 if you’d like the gun-function and shooting review. The $12 range fee is paid that day, and gun rental is $30 with ammunition if you need one.
The county clerk may have mailed it to your old address, even if you updated your license. Ask your county clerk’s office to reissue it, or renew on paper with form RI-012B (see the PIN section above).
Check your spam or junk folder, especially with Outlook or Hotmail. The subject is “Your Michigan CPL Online Renewal Videos Are Ready.” Still missing? Call us and we’ll resend it.
No, it only runs on a Windows PC. For other devices, you can search for “laser dry fire” apps. We don’t make or support those.
The online videos are a final sale. The private shooting lesson can be refunded if you ask at least 48 hours before it. The $39 in-person class follows the same policy as our CPL classes: all sales are final, and tuition isn’t refundable once your seat is reserved. That said, life happens — call us, and emergency rescheduling may be possible in limited circumstances. Changing your mind or finding a more convenient class doesn’t qualify. If you can’t make it, please call as early as you can so we can offer your seat to someone else.
